A “developmental screening” is a brief check that provides a snapshot of a child’s communication, motor, cognitive, self-help and social-emotional skills. A developmental screening can be completed by a doctor, a child care provider or other trained professional. A screening can determine whether a child’s development is appropriate for his or her age. If a child’s development is on track, a developmental screening can help identify a child’s areas of strength. The child’s doctor or child care provider can help find ways to continue to support the child’s development.
The Collaboration provides support and training to doctors and child care professionals to conduct developmental screenings of all children in their care. We provide training and technical assistance to conduct the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, including the Social-Emotional Questionnaire, at least twice a year.
This coming year the Collaboration is excited to increase the number of providers participating in our ASQ Online Developmental Screening Project. We welcome Cathy’s Day Care Home, Oak Park Friends School and the St. Catherine – St. Lucy School preschool program to the list of participating programs and medical practices. There are currently a total of 10 Family Child Care programs, 17 center-based programs, 1 community program and 3 medical practices participating in the ASQ Online Developmental Screening Project this year.
If you are a doctor or child care professional who would like to learn more about participating in the Collaboration’s developmental screening project, please contact Shannon Ellison at (708) 613-6122 or sellison@collab4kids.org.
